Badger Launches iPhone App

NYC-based Badger has launched a “lovingly made” geo-tagged photo sharing iPhone app.

And after playing with it yesterday, I agree with their assessment: this app was made avec amour.

As the name suggests, photo submitters can tag their photos under a digital badge, which can be your own personal symbol or else something more abstract, say flowers or architecture or favorite park benches

The fun comes about when you load pics under these more generic categories, where those with a common interest can share additional images and comment on the photographic efforts of the community.

I am a very amateur photographer, and I love sharing pics taken with my Olympus E450 DSLR.

Without an iPhone, I instead uploaded a few pics directly onto Badger’s site, and then manually tagged the photo using their embedded Google Maps applet.

The whole process was pretty much frictionless, and of course it would even be more fluid with an iPhone.

My contribution was a photo of black-eyed Susans that I discovered in Washington Square Park a few weeks ago.

I classified it, appropriately enough, under the Flowers badge. As I was exploring other existing badges, I found an eclectic collection that covered street art, fancy drinks, f– yeah moments, i love coffee, and even astrophotography—I wonder how that’s geotagged?

Badger displays the locations of tagged photos on a map.  If you’re like me and want to find coffee bars of Manhattan that serve espressos with exceptional crema, Badger can be your guide.

Overall, this a very well designed site.  And while there are plenty of photo sharing startups and geo-location is not as cutting edge as it used to be, Badger could pick up a thriving community in New York City and other target rich urban areas.

Note to Badger developers: I am still waiting for some clever geo-focused startup to provide turn-by-turn walking routes that would let me circumnavigate the actual objects behind the images.

The Badger iPhone app is available for free from the App Store.
