In his speech at the New America Foundation outlining the FCC’s National Broadband Plan, Chairman Genachowski said that TV broadcasters are not using their spectrum efficiently. He proposed a Mobile Future Auction. The idea is that TV broadcasters could voluntarily trade their spectrum for a share of the auction proceeds. Genachoswki stated a goal of freeing up to 500MHz over the next decade. Is this just another sign that the mobile Internet is replacing free, over-the-air TV? Yup.
